Ortiz vs Martin: Review

Luis Ortiz was down twice but able to get back up on both instances and knockout Charles Martin in Round 6. Ortiz was down once in Round 1 and then again in Round 4.

Ortiz (33-2-0, 28 KOs) has been inactive for more than one year. His last fight was in November 2020. He looked a tad slower in this fight against a much younger Martin. Ortiz was 42 years old coming into this fight. The first knockdown was a right hand from Martin as Ortiz tries to get in. Martin caught him and landed on the side of the head of Ortiz. The second knockdown was more of a stiff jab as both men came forward. I was surprised to see Ortiz go down from that punch. It is rare to see someone goes down from a jab.

With two knockdowns early in the fight, Martin's (28-3-1, 25 KOs) confidence was high. He continued to push Ortiz backwards, and he stood his ground. After he scored a knockdown in Round 4, Martin raised his hand not in celebration though, but It seemed to me that he was very confident that it is his night. Martin was confident but still very focused on the fight. He did not show any signs of overconfidence, his eyes were laser focus on the job. He can not afford to blink with two eyes as he knows very well that Ortiz still packed tremendous power on both hands.

Obviously behind the scorecards, Ortiz's corner advised him to throw more jabs and don't go for the home-run. His corner wanted Ortiz to focus more on his jab maybe to take time to recover from those two knockdowns. Ortiz knees buckled on those knockdown. It looked like age is catching him. He can take the punch but his legs betrayed him. He was not hurt on both knockdowns. He got up with a smile on his face on both instance.

At ring side, Ortiz's family was emotional at what they were watching so far. His daughter was in tears watching his father went a trip to the canvas twice already. All these, turned around later on.

In Round 6, Ortiz caught Martin with a left hand to the head that stuns and buckles Martin's legs. Martin was in a very dangerous situation as he looked disoriented. His guard were down and his still on his feet. Ortiz sensing the opportunity jumped right on and swarmed Martin with shots after shots. Martin's left hand surprisingly got entangled between the top rope and next rope below as he went down. The referee helped him to untangled his hand.

The precious seconds bought to remove his hand was not enough to recover from the barrage of punches Ortiz unleashed. The referee let the fight continue. Ortiz obviously smelled blood, blitzed Martin and Martin went down for the second time. The referee took the count. Martin was able to get back up but obviously on shaky legs. The referee had seen enough and waved the fight. The time of the stoppage 1:37 remaining in Round 6.

Martin protested the stoppage but for me it was the right call to save Martin from unnecessary damage.

Watch: Luis Ortiz-Tony Thompson Highlights

Luis Ortiz to fight Tony Thompson following Dimitrenko's refusal to face Ortiz

Following Alexander Dimitrenko's report pulled out of the fight, Luis Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs) is set to face veteran Tony Thompson (40-6, 27 KOs) in a 12-round main event at the DC Armory, in Washington D.C. on March 5 on HBO Boxing After Dark.

It will be another tough test for the hard-hitting Cuban amateur standout. Thompson, 44, is a veteran of 46 fights and has a lot of experience on his sleeves on fight night.

“If you look at my competition and his [Ortiz], it’s not even close. This isn’t the amateurs. I’m going to use my experience as a professional to take him places he’s never been" says Thompson.

Ortiz'z supposes opponent, Alexander Dimitrenko refuses to sign the fight contract as Golden Boy Promotions (Ortiz's promoter) did not agree to what Greg Cohen said as "11th-hour unrealistic financial requests".

With Dimitrenko's refusal to take the fight, I'm expecting a step-down opponent for Ortiz as the scheduled fight is closing in. Well, Thompson is not really that kind of opponent, as he had stiffer competition compared to the younger Ortiz.

Luis Ortiz set to face Tony Thompson

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 8, 2016) - Fresh from a stunning knockout of Bryant "By-By" Jennings and eager to continue his quest to be the best heavyweight in the sport, WBA Interim Heavyweight World Champion Luis "The Real King Kong" Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs) will make his first title defense of 2016 when he faces former world title challenger Tony "The Tiger" Thompson (40-6, 27 KOs) in 12-round main event at the DC Armory, in Washington D.C.on Saturday, March 5 and televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark®beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Opening up the live telecast, top contender and 2008 Olympian Sadam "World Kid" Ali (22-0, 13 KOs) will face former WBA Super Lightweight World Champion Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) in a 12-round co-main event for the vacant WBO Welterweight World Championship.

"This fight is just another stepping stone on my path to becoming the unified heavyweight world champion," said Luis Ortiz. "I came to the United States to chase my American Dream and fighting at the nation's capital is a dream come true. My life is coming full circle, and I know that this fight will put me a step closer to achieving everything I have worked so hard for in my career."

"I'm happy to be back on HBO fighting for another world title," said Tony Thompson. "If you look at my competition and his [Ortiz], it's not even close. This isn't the amateurs. I'm going to use my experience as a professional to take him places he's never been. Odlanier Solis was a great Cuban amateur but he was also an Olympic Gold Medalist, and I beat him twice. Ortiz thinks he has it tough. I've been avoided for my entire career. Just about all my fights have been on short notice and in foreign countries. If I fought the guys Ortiz fought, I'd be undefeated too. If Ortiz is King Kong, I'm Godzilla; Godzilla coming to whoop some ass!"

"Luis Ortiz and Sadam Ali are two top fighters in our sport today and both will impress audiences in the ring on March 5 in their first fights of 2016," said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. "Luis demonstrated in his brilliant knockout over Bryant Jennings in December that he is an elite fighter that can dominate even the toughest opponent. Sadam Ali is a phenomenal fighter, and I think he is the future of the welterweight division, which is very exciting."

"Tony Thompson is a very talented hard punching contender who has beaten David Price and Odlanier Solis twice each over the last 2 years," said Leon R. Margules, President of Warriors Boxing and Promotions. "Luis Ortiz will have his hands full on March 5 in clearly his toughest challenge to date, and in Tony's hometown. We are very excited he is getting this opportunity."

"We are excited to televise a heavyweight knockout machine like Luis Ortiz in a tough bout on a big stage against Tony Thompson on March 5 in our nation's capital," said Peter Nelson, Executive Vice President, HBO Sports. "The winner will take a significant step up in the public's esteem. The Ali-Vargas co-feature is a terrific 50-50 fight at welterweight that has fans eager to see who will come out on top."

"To fight for the world championship is something that I have been training and fighting for my whole career," said Sadam Ali. "I am grateful for the opportunity and promise all my fans I will not let them down. On March 5, I will have my hands raised up in victory as the new WBO Welterweight World Champion."

"This is a different Jessie Vargas," said Jessie Vargas. "I learned a lot from my last fight and I am ready to prove that I am still a world champion. I'm coming back with a Vengeance!"

"Jessie Vargas knows what's at stake this time around" said Carl Moretti, VP, Top Rank. "He plans to take full advantage of this opportunity and we fully expect his hand to be raised as the winner in what promises to be a great fight."

Sadam Ali vs. Jessie Vargas is a 12-round fight for the vacant WBO Welterweight World Championship presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Top Rank. A native of Camaguey, Cuba who now makes his home in Miami, Luis "The Real King Kong" Ortiz was one of boxing's breakout stars of 2015. The 36-year-old southpaw has scored three knockouts in three fights, each bigger than the one before it. Most notably, Ortiz defended his WBA Interim Heavyweight World Championship via seventh-round technical knockout of top contender Bryant "By-By" Jennings on Dec. 19. It was a win that marked Ortiz as a must see for fight fans around the world and securing him a place on heavyweight pound-for-pound list. A decorated amateur in his home country, Ortiz, became a professional in 2010 and has gone on to win multiple titles including the WBC FecarBox Heavyweight, the WBA Fedelatin Heavyweight, the WBO Latino Heavyweight and the WBC Latino Heavyweight titles during his undefeated streak.

A skilled boxer from Washington DC, Tony "The Tiger" Thompson is a former world title challenger who has taken tough challenges on his way to the top of the heavyweight division. A professional since 2000, Thompson has earned USA Maryland Sate Heavyweight Title, the WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight Title and the WBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight title before his first attempt at the unified heavyweight world championship against Wladimir Klitschko in 2008. Although unsuccessful, Thompson continued fighting and remained undefeated until his second clash against Klitschko in 2012. Since then, the heavyweight titlist has stayed active and last held the WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight Title in 2015. Now, Thompson is ready to challenge Ortiz for the WBA Interim Heavyweight World Title on his way to become a world champion.

A member of the 2008 United States Olympic boxing team, and the first Arab-American to represent the U.S. at the Olympics, Brooklyn's Sadam "World Kid" Ali has been sailing up the welterweight ladder since a big year in 2013. Ali has had back-to-back title victories over Michael "Cold Blood" Clark, where he won the NABO Welterweight Title; Jeremy "Hollywood" Bryan, winning the WBO Inter-Continental Welterweight Title; Luis Carlos "El Potro" Abregu, defending his titles and giving the experienced fighter his second loss; and Francisco "Chia" Santana where he earned the WBA International Welterweight Title, the 27-year-old with remarkable speed and power is ready for his world title shot against former world champion Jessie Vargas.

Las Vegas standout Jessie Vargas has been following a path to the top similar to that of Ali, as he's turned back several top foes since making his professional debut in 2008. A former WBA world champion at 140 pounds who defeated Khabib "The Hawk" Allakhverdiev, Anton "The Pick Hammer" Novikov and Antonio DeMarco in super lightweight title fights, Vargas lost a controversial 2015 fight to Timothy "Desert Storm" Bradley for the WBO Interim Welterweight World Championship. Now, Vargas could get his wish of becoming a world champion once more when he faces Sadam "World Kid" Ali for the WBO Welterweight World Championship.

A boxer and his little girl

On Saturday night, two exciting heavyweight contenders squared off in New York to put them in line for a heavyweight title showdown. Those contenders were Bryant Jennings (19-2) and Luis "King Kong" Ortiz (24-0). The fight was toe to toe action you rarely see between heavyweights. It was clearly the antithesis of Klitschko vs Fury back in November.

Jennings has a boxer’s style, usually fighting on the outside, circling left to right, with excellent lateral movement. But trainer John David Jackson decided to change things up and have Jennings fight on the inside of the much bigger Ortiz. Jennings banged Ortiz's head and body with vicious hooks and uppercuts. It was a risk Jennings was willing to take so he would not get caught at the end of a powerful blow from the Cuban puncher. It was a risk that did not pan out well for Jennings. Jennings was knocked down with a brutal uppercut and a straight left that made the referee step in and call the fight.

The fight shook the heavyweight division and showed “King Kong” is a force to be reckoned with. But my attention was drawn before the fight even started. I was touched by Ortiz’s inspiration. His inspiration is his four year old little girl who was born with a medical condition that included necrosis in one of her fingers. Ortiz said that he was willing to have one of his fingers amputated so when his daughter was old enough to see his father’s hand, he would tell her she was born just like her Daddy. I immediately thought of a couple of other boxers who were inspired to do great things in boxing because of the love and inspiration they received from their ailing daughters. Those boxers are two time Cruiserweight Champion Steve “USS” Cunningham and Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder.

It is truly amazing how “Daddy’s little girl” can be such an inspiration to the most lethal fighters to ever step in the ring. Cunningham’s daughter was born with a rare heart defect known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome. It is a condition in which the left side of the heart isn’t fully developed. Jesse Dougherty quoted Cunningham referencing his daughter’s battle, "If she can do that, I think I can do anything in boxing, in life, I always take that into the ring.”

Wilder’s daughter was born with the congenital disorder spina bifida. X-rays revealed a hole in the spine shortly after her birth as well as the condition which usually confines a person to a wheelchair for life. Wilder was quoted by Lem Satterfield saying, "“She inspires me and we inspire each other each and every day, man. She inspires me still now,” said Wilder, “because when she was a year old, I promised her that Daddy would become a world champion.” Wilder fulfilled that dream and continues to take on any challengers.

It was interesting seeing the behemoth Ortiz getting very emotional talking about bringing his children to the United States and giving them a better life. Ortiz said, “It inspires me even more to obtain my dream, obtain my dream which is to be World Champion.”

Only children can bring out that kind of emotion out of a Daddy. I know this feeling all too well. Seeing your beautiful daughter suffering, you feel helpless. The only thing you can do is pray. It drives you to be a better man. A better person. A better father. A person who would sacrifice himself any day of the week for his family. It is an experience that drives you closer to God. Putting yourself whole heartedly before someone else is something you would have never dreamed of doing before seeing that little girl receiving round the clock care from nurses and doctors. But turning that stressful and horrible experience into something positive, such as earning a world title, is something truly special. It is something that you wouldn’t expect a tiny little girl to motivate you to accomplish. But these little girls did just that for Cunningham and Wilder. Now let’s see if it could come to fruition for Ortiz.

This is for you Annalise. Daddy loves you...

BRYANT JENNINGS AND LUIS ORTIZ TO BATTLE FOR THE WBA INTERIM HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 19

FROM TURNING STONE RESORT CASINO, VERONA, NEW YORK TELEVISED LIVE ON HBO AFTER DARK®

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 23, 2015) - Two heavyweight titans will close out the 2015 boxing year with a bang on December 19, as former world title contender Bryant "By-By" Jennings (19-1, 10 KOs) takes on recently crowned WBA Interim Heavyweight belt holder Luis "The Real King Kong" Ortiz (23-0, 20 KOs) in a 12-round championship fight. The event will take place at Turning Stone Resort Casino, in Verona, New York and will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark.

"To headline an HBO event and fighting a former world title contender like Jennings is what I have been preparing my whole career for," said Luis Ortiz. "I know that after this fight people will know that I deserve a shot at becoming the 'Heavyweight Champion of the World.' I think Jennings doesn't even know what he's stepping in to on the 19, I'm coming to make a statement. This fight is going to be an exciting stepping stone to achieve my dream."

"With a mix of speed, power and amateur pedigree that is second-to-none, Luis Ortiz has quickly established himself as a force in the heavyweight division," said Oscar De La Hoya, President and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. "Luis is so hungry to continue his rise in the division that he has agreed to fight an enormously talented opponent in Bryant Jennings just two months after Luis' destruction of Matias Vidondo to win the WBA Interim title. Boxing fans looking for a premiere heavyweight fight should make sure to tune in to HBO's Boxing After Dark on December 19th."

"It's my pleasure to bring another great heavyweight showdown to the boxing fans with Bryant Jennings taking on an undefeated fighter like Luis Ortiz. The fans know that I have always, and will continue, to put on real competitive fights," said Gary Shaw.

Shaw continued, "Jennings is a true professional who remains in phenomenal shape throughout the year. He showed in his last fight versus Klitschko that he belongs with the elite heavyweights and understands the challenges that lie ahead. Ortiz, who brings a high knockout ratio to the ring, will have his hands full, and Jennings is nothing like the fighter he just fought, whom he knocked out in the third round. Ortiz has never faced a challenge of a Philadelphia fighter like Bryant Jennings and he's going to find out real quick that this is another level. Jennings is ready to continue his quest to become heavyweight champion with VADA testing agreed to by both promotional companies for this fight."

"I'm excited to be getting back in the ring against Luis Ortiz, another big heavyweight," said Bryant Jennings. "He's coming off an impressive win and he thinks he's at the top of his game. These are the typical type of opponents I like to showcase my skills against. I've come a long way since my last fight against Klitschko, and I have continued to train with a fierce intensity. When you suffer defeat for the first time you learn things about yourself you never knew. I've improved a great deal on all aspects of my game both mentally and physically. The world will see a great fight when I square off against Ortiz, that I can guarantee you. I'll be driving the WBA belt back home to Philly."

"This fight is between two evenly matched heavyweights, and that always has a purity to its mystique," said Peter Nelson, vice president of programming for HBO Sports. "Jennings has proven to have heart in equal scale to what Ortiz has shown in power. On December 19, we will see a battle of wills."

"We're looking forward to hosting another exciting night of boxing at Turning Stone with HBO, Golden Boy Promotions and Gary Shaw Productions," said Ray Halbritter, Oneida Nation Representative and Nation Enterprises CEO. "In three years, we've hosted 16 nationally-televised fights, distinguishing our resort as premier destination for world-class boxing."

Luis "The Real King Kong" Ortiz had amassed nearly 350 wins before making his way to the United States to chase championship gold as a professional. Unbeaten in 25 bouts, the 36-year-old southpaw holds a knockout win over Monte Barrett and in June needed less than a round to dispatch Byron Polley. Ortiz was last seen on the undercard of Golovkin vs. Lemieux as part of the pay-per-view live telecast defeating Matias Ariel Vivdondo by third round knockout and gaining the WBA Interim Heavyweight World Title.

Hailed as one of the best heavyweight boxers in the sport, Bryant Jennings has faced some of the most feared fighters in the sport. In 2014 alone, Jennings defeated Mike Perez via split decision in July and Artur Szpilka via technical knockout in January. In 2013, Jennings passed his first career tested when he defeated Andrey Fedosov via sixth-round knockout in June. Most recently, Jennings was seen in the ring against the heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in April, suffering his first defeat since his professional debut in 2010. Now, the titan is looking for redemption and another shot at world title stardom when he faces Ortiz for the WBA Interim Heavyweight Title.

Jennings vs. Ortiz is a 12-round heavyweight bout fight for the WBA Interim Heavyweight Title presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Gary Shaw Productions. Doors open at 6:00 p.m., and the HBO Boxing After Dark telecast begins live at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT.

Host of the event, the Oneida Nation's Turning Stone Resort Casino continues to distinguish itself as a premier destination for blockbuster boxing matches. The December 19 fight will mark Turning Stone Resort Casino's 16th nationally-televised boxing event in less than two years, cementing the resort as a mecca for knockout televised fights. Located in Upstate New York, the four-season destination resort offers world-class entertainment and gaming, award-winning accommodations, a diverse mix of restaurants, luxury spas and several nightlife options.
