Who's next for Mark Magsayo?

Mark Magsayo defeated Garry Russel Jr. via majority decision upset for their featherweight showdown in Atlantic City on Saturday. The 26 years old Filipino rising star remains undefeated and said he's "willing to fight anybody" as he's now the champion.

With that being said by Magsayo (24-0-0, 16 KOs) let's take a look at his possible next opponents.

One of the potential opponents for his next fight would be against another undefeated fighter---Rey Vargas. The WBC is set to order for this fight. It seemed that Magsayo would not have a chance to get an optional fight as he contracted the obligations of the previous champion (Russel Jr.), who had already been notified to face Vargas as explained by the WBC. So, it is most certainly that Vargas would be next.

Meanwhile, if Magsayo had to choose as to whom he will fight next, he said that he wanted to fight Leo Santa Cruz and Luis Nery.

"I will fight anyone but in my division. I would like to fight Leo Santa and Luis Nery," Magsayo said. "

So there you go, those are the potential next opponents for Mark Magsayo. We have Vargas, Santa Cruz and Nery. But we don't know the preference of the promoters. That still remains to be seen.

As a boxing fan, If I were to choose, I would choose the potential opponents of Mark Magsayo from the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board (TBRB) featherweight rankings.

Below is the current TBRB featherweight rankings as of this writing:

As you can see above, Santa Cruz and Nery are not listed. So, I like to see Magsayo fight either Mauricio Lara, ranked no. 1 or Emmanuel Navarette, ranked no. 2. If I'm not mistaken, the TBRB rules will crown a champion if the top three ranked fighters in a particular division will fight. So, Magsayo has the chance to be crowned as the new lineal featherweight champion of the world. A throne abdicated by no less than his "idol" and promoter Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.

You, as a boxing fan, who do you want Magsayo to fight next?

Mark Magsayo stops Chris Avalos

As expected, it looks like this fight will gonna take the spotlight out of the main event.

Mark "Magnifico" Magsayo gave out a magnificent performance tonight, stopping American Chris Avalos in the 6th Round of their featherweight title fight at the full-packed Cebu City Sports Center, in Cebu City at the undercard of Nonito Donaire vs Zsolt Bedak title fight.

In the first round, it was already an action-packed fight. Both men got no feel-it round as they unleashed vicious punches. But it was Magsayo who got the better of it as his looping overhand right find its home on Avalos' head.

In the second round, Magsayo came out like a blazing bull with both nostrils smoking as he peppered Avalos with power shots upstairs. A big right-hand wobbles Avalos and Magsayo were all over to finished Avalos' up, but the more experienced American managed to hold on and survive the Magsayo onslaught.

In the third, it was obvious that Magsayo really burned out as he slowed down his offense. Avalos on the other hand recovered his footing and was in the offensive mode. Big left and right tagged Magsayo, which sent him flat on his ass. Magsayo was on unsteady legs this time, but he managed to hold on. In the final seconds, Magsayo took a knee and was ruled a slip by the referee as Avalos looking for the kill.

In the fourth, Avalos came out blazing with the momentum shift on his side. But the sound defense of Magsayo was able to fend off those power shots coming from the Californian opponent.

In the fifth, Magsayo again stunned Avalos by walloping their right hand. Magsayo was all over Avalos to finish him. But the experience of Avalos really took over. He tried to hold on and regain his footing. But this time it was obvious that the power shots landed has taken a toll on him.

In the sixth, all-out aggression of Magsayo was unleashed. Winging left and right hooks tagged Avalos at will upstairs as Avalos' hands dropped as he was stunned by the power shots from Magsayo. An unanswered left and right from Magsayo that tagged Avalos while on the ropes opted the corner to throw in the towel of surrender, and referee Tapdasan immediately stopped the fight.

Pinoy Pride 33: Pinoy boxers’ moment to shine

Donnie Nietes is the longest-reigning Filipino boxing champion spanning 8 years. But that span of time being a champion he never had a fight in the US. A fight in the US is an ultimate dream of a non-US-resident professional boxer. In the US most big-time boxing card happens.

Not only Nietes will fight first time in the US. Pagara brothers Jason and Albert, and Mark Magsayo will also debut on US soil. They will fight separate opponents.

Nietes (36-1-4, 21Kos) will headline Pinoy Pride 33 versus Mexican Juan Alejo. Although Mexico shares a border with the US, it's also Alejo’s (21-3, 13KOs) first fight in the US. What a coincidence!

Undefeated Albert Pagara (24-0-0, 17 KOs) faces KO artist William Gonzalez (27-5, 23 KOs) of Nicaragua. They will battle for Pagara’s intercontinental junior featherweight title. While his brother Jason will face Santos Benavides for 10 rounds or less in a non-title fight.

ALA Promotions in association with ABS-CBN Sports promotes Pinoy Pride 33. It's also ALA promotions' and ABS-CBN Sports' first time to stage a fight card in the US.

Michael  Aldequer's successful Pinoy Pride series originates in Cebu, Philippines. He found tremendous success in the Philippines and in the middle east. Particularly Dubai.

With so much of first time and outcome might be uncertain. But what is certain is that: Pinoy boxers will have the opportunity to showcase their talent in the US boxing ring.

I expect Pinoy boxers to give their very best. This fight will be their ticket to better opportunities and bigger paydays.

Nietes talked about betting pound-for-pound new kingpin Roman Gonzalez if given a chance. So, Nietes need not only win but should look impressive. And get past Alejo for a possible fight with Roman. Gonzalez will also fight on the same night at a different venue. He will face Filipino-American Brian Viloria.

But well, who knows if Viloria bets Roman, it might set up a fight with Nietes (could be unlikely even if Viloria wins as this two sparred in preparation for their separate opponents). Just exploring possibilities here...

For Albert and Jason Pagara, and Mark Magsayo, it is their time to impress the American fans. If they will come out victorious in a spectacular manner; big fights await.

Stakes are really high for this card! Don't miss it!
