While everything is Mayweather-McGregor on the internet let's not forget that we have a nice card tonight. Multi-division titlist Adrien "The Problem" Broner takes on undefeated Mikey Garcia in a 12-round jr. welterweight bout on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.

On Friday night the fighters stepped on the scales for the official weigh-in. Both have no problem with their respective weights and came in below the 140-pound limit. Broner tipped the scales at 138.75 lbs. while Garcia weighed 139.5 lbs.

It was also Broner's 28th birthday on Friday's weigh-in. Leonard Ellerbe presented a birthday cake to Broner.

"I'll fu@k this nigger," says Broner when asked about his final thoughts on tomorrow's fight.

Well, I hope he does because I believed Mikey Garcia is not an easy nut to crack. He's a very calm fighter inside the savage ring. He's so methodical in his approach.

"I'm very calm. I don't let my emotions get the best out of me," says Garcia when asked about how different his style compare to Adrien.

"It's gonna be a hell of a fight and I'll come out victorious once again," said Garcia.

I'm sure it's gonna be a very entertaining fight tonight. Don't miss it, boxing people!

Mikey Garcia was sharp and sensational inside in the ring on Saturday night as he demolished bull-strong Dejan Zlanticanin in three rounds of their lightweight clash at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. There's no sign of ring rust! Although, he just came back in July after a 2.5 year hiatus.

The long lay-off didn't make his blade dull. Instead, he used those years that he's not able to fight to sharpen his skills, enhance his talent. A saying attributed to Abraham Lincoln that says: "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe". Garcia utilized those 2.5 years wisely and it paid off.

Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs) was very focused. It seemed he never blink his eyes the entire fight. He landed jabs from the as Zlaticanin tried to find his range. His textbook 1-2 combination was very effective.

Zlaticanin (22-1, 15 KOs) tried his level best to close the gap. But the 5' 4" champion was greeted with stiff jabs every time he comes in. The 5' 7" challenger used height and reach advantage to fire accurate shots from the distance. Zlaticanin never won a round on my scorecards.

In the third, Garcia surprised Zlaticanin with a right uppercut then a left hand that got him in real trouble before Garcia landed the home run, a big right hand that knocked Zlaticanin out unconscious. He was motionless for few minutes. I was worried, he might not be able to get up. But thanks that in a few more minutes he was able to move and sit on a stool. The crowd felt relief as they cheered for Zlaticanin.

"I'm very happy he's okay and I'm glad he was able to recover from that. The natural response is to be celebrating and to be cheerful, but then concern does kick in when I saw he was still laying there for a few minutes. I'm glad he's okay, Garcia said.

Zlantican said that he was getting ready pick up a little bit in Round 3. But of course he gave credit to the new champion.

"I was just getting ready to pick it up a little bit and I got between the ropes and then he hit me with a good, hard punch. Mikey is a good fighter without a doubt. I never was able to get into the fight" he said.

In the above video, courtesy of Elie Sechback, Mikey Garcia confirmed that he's indeed free to fight again after being released by Top Rank.


"Now that we are completely free, I'm just very very happy. I was great to know that I did everything to prove my point. You know I fought legally what I truly believed. You know, if there's something wrong, we gonna correct it. We gonna make it right," says Garcia.

Garcia went on Twitter Wednesday hinting about coming back and being free to fight again.

He posted on Twitter a picture of unlocked handcuff captioned with the following hashtags #free, #theythrewinthetowel, #takeover, #imcomingback,

Mikey Garcia could be back in the ring anytime soon. It seemed the undefeated super featherweight titlist managed to end up promotional conflict with Bob Arum's Top Rank Promotions.


Garcia posted on Twitter on Wednesday with a hashtag #free #theythrewinthetowel #imcomingback with a photograph of an unlocked handcuff.


Garcia has been on the sideline after winning and defending his super featherweight title against Juan Carlos Burgos on 25th January 2014. But the following May, Garcia filed a lawsuit against Top Rank and wanted to get out of their promotional agreement.


The problem started when Garcia was scheduled to fight Yuriorkis Gamboa but reportedly demand 'astronomical numbers' that nobody is willing to pay according to Arum.


"I just don't know what they are up to. It's stupid the whole thing. I mean, here he wants to come back and he wants to fight and as far as I've heard he's asking for astronomical numbers that nobody is willing to pay," said Arum.

New York -- Young rising star Mikey Garcia, 34-0 (KO 28), won the fight with ease against a more agile opponent in Juan Carlos Burgos 30-2-2 (KO 20), on Saturday night on HBO main event at the Madison Square Garden Theater, New York, New York, USA.

Yes it was an easy victory.

But fans and ringside observer were unimpressed. Unimpressed because they expect more from Garcia, who is positioned to be the "next big star" in boxing. There were talks that he could be a future opponent for the Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao. But I don't know if he had that "next big star" quality in his performance last night. Well, "skill set" win fights but "star quality" let fans buy tickets.

Garcia was in full control of the fight except that second round -- Burgos landed a counter shot that buckled Garcia. In the third round Garcia stepped up a little bit and tagged Burgos with a hard shot that wobbled his opponent.  I think those were the only notable action in the ring. And the rest of the rounds were all for Garcia and won by the scores of 118-110, 118-110, and 119-109.

On the other hand, Burgos was satisfied to stay outside Garcia's range. After he tasted the power of Garcia in the third, he seems happy staying in harms way. He utilized his reach and height advantage to help his mode to survive.

With Burgos on the survival mode, it is Garcia's call to do something and create a star quality move utilizing his skill set. But Garcia failed in that category -- he's too cautious and not willing to take a risk.

He don't want to take more risk... maybe it has something to do with his chin?

Martinez drop him in the second of their fight. Burgos wobbled him also in the second round of this fight. It made Nigel Collins worry.

Mikey Garcia vs. Juan Carlos Burgos: Fight Preview and PredictionThe first three weekends of January 2014 is somewhat slack in terms of high profile boxing. Except last week, wherein we're treated with the "Canadian Superbowl" in boxing. The fight between Luscian Bute and Jean Pascal. But sadly, the fight didn't transpired the way it was hyped. Bute was nowhere near the fighter he used to be. He seemed too nervous throughout the fight, except the final round.


Now I'm glad this week is loaded with several cards. Actually, this is my first preview of a fight for 2014. Here the fight cards you shouldn't miss before this month will be over:

January 24

  • Fox Sports USA Fight Night: Antonio Orozco vs. Miguel Angel Huerta

  • Latin American Light Heavyweight title: Roberto Bolonti vs. Jose Clavero

  • ESPN2 Friday Fight Night: Thomas Williams vs. Cornelius White

  • Resorts International, Atlantic City, NJ (NBC Sports): Curtis Stevens vs Patrick Majewski

  • Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio, CA (FOX Sports 1): Cornelius Bundrage vs Joey Hernandez

  • Little Creek Casino, Shelton, WA (ESPN2): Rico Ramos vs Jonathan Arrellano


And on January 25, the fight between Mikey Garcia and Juan Carlos Burgos at The Theater, Madison Square Garden, New York, NY on HBO. This is actually the purpose of this post.  This is a fight between Transnational Boxing Ranking Board, Garcia 33-0-0 (KO 28) ranked number two and Burgos 30-1-2 (KO 20) ranked number three in the super featherweight division. A fight that could be a championship match for the vacant TBRB's 130 pound  division, if not because of the very "strict" championship policy of this emerging ranking body, that: the "first-ranked contender must fight the second-ranked contender to fill the vacancy".

Well, Mikey Garcia is among those names (Provodnikov, GGG, Santa Cruz, Kovalev and etc...) that continue to buzz since last year. And maybe, will hit big time this year. There were write-ups that showed concern over fast tracking the career of the 26 year old Mexican-American ring tactician. Top Rank boss Bob Arum talked about Mikey and Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquaio potential match-up. A bout which is possible because both fighter were on the same side of promotion/network alliance.

However, 147 pound division, where the Pacman currently resides along with the big names/big payday potential opponents for Mikey is still three division north from where he is at super featherweight.

Garcia is a very cool guy in the ring. He's very relax and compose. He's young but his patience in the ring can be compared to a veteran tactician. He said that as he gain "more experience" he also becomes "confident with his skills". Although, I could say that Garcia, early in his career, tend to play it safe too much. But what he said, is what I saw in his previous fights. He becomes a little bit more aggressive in his fight with Salido and Martinez. Although against Martinez, Garcia was down in the second round. He was caught by a perfect counter shot as he moved forward.

Garcia's style

Garcia used to let his opponent follow him while he throw counter shots while on his back foot. His snapping jabs serves as measuring stick for the distance between him and his opponent. And then once his opponent become so complacent in coming forward, as he tries to back pedal, Garcia will pop his opponent with a jab (and if it will connect) he will follow through a power shot with his right hand, while moving his lead foot forward. A move very well-timed and countered by Martinez that dropped Garcia.

On the opposite corner is Juan Carlos Burgos. Burgos, has been fighting several times at this division. Burgos also has the height advantage. An inch and half taller. He's certainly a busy fighter who works for the body very well. He's been in a back-to-back draws in his last two fights. He draws a common opponent, Martinez, and short noticed Amidu in July. Burgos could be very mentally prepared for this fight to keep his career on the winning track; fighting  and winning against Garcia is the way to do it.

My prediction: Garcia by knock out.

On November 9, on HBO, 9:30 pm EST, will bring on a triple-header that for me I can call not just a sure hit in terms of action but of course worth for your hard earned bucks. This weekend you'll be into a big treat. Rocky Martinez vs. Mikey Garcia, Nonito Donaire vs Vic Darchinyan (rematch), Vanes Martirosyan vs Demetrius Andrade will be in one event, one night, for your entertainment.

Nonito Donaire will face Vic Darchinyan and looking to get back into the winner's column in a rematch that takes several years in the making. Darchinyan had long been gunning Donaire for this rematch and it's exciting see how this two will fight again. They met before early on in their career. Who do you think will be the better man after their last meeting more than 5 years ago.

Meanwhile Mikey Garcia will face Rocky Martinez for another division north of 126 pound division. Garcia failed to make the featherweight limit on his first title defense against Juan Manuel Lopez in his last fight. Garcia is looking to make a statement at the super featherweight division. Will Garcia continue his rise to the elite level?

Vanes Martirosyan will face Demetrius Andrade for the vacant light middleweight title. It is exciting to see who will keep their ledger unblemished.
