Andre Ward, although just fought 3 times in three years, showed no ring-rust on a stellar performance against a credible undefeated prospect, Cuban Sullivan Barrera in a 12-round non-title match at the Oracle Arena, Oakland, California on HBO.

In the get-go it was obvious that Ward still had that quick and sharp hands at the light heavyweight division, targeting Barrera at will with precise combination. Ward (29-0, 15 KOs)  dropped Barrera in the third round with a well-placed counter left hook to the head. Although Barrera (17-1, 12 KO) obviously not hurt, but the timing of the impact did just enough to put his ass on the canvas, as his feet were not in the right position to absorb the timing of the counter.

The rest of the remaining rounds showed Ward out-boxing the solid amateur boxer with accuracy and superior defense. Since it's Easter, I gave a mercy round for Barrera. That's round 11. He landed solid combination that stopped Ward on his track.

Ringside judges had the fight 119-109, 117-109, and 117-108 for Ward.

With Ward getting past Barrera, as expected, is 'tentatively scheduled' or is expected to face the hard hitting light heavyweight titlist and Transnational Boxing Ranking Board ranked number 1 contender Sergey Kovalev. I think this will be the most anticipated match-up for this year aside from Mayweather-Golovkin, Canelo-Golovkin or Ward-Golovkin.

Former two-time world champion Amir "King" Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) said that his fight against lineal middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) "will be like a game of chess". Khan and Canelo wrap up their three-city international press tour in Los Angeles at the Universal CityWalk.

"It will be like a game of chess. Canelo is very strong. I have a very good trainer who will tell me the right game plan. We will go in to win this fight, and I will prove people wrong. Even though it is Cinco de Mayo, the British fans will come out. In Vegas, there will be more British flags than Mexican flags" said Khan.

Canelo and Khan scheduled on May 7 at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and can be viewed live on HBO Pay-Per-View.

As informed earlier by ALA Promotion via press release, Albert Pagara's Nicaraguan opponent Yesner Talavera (15-3 -1, 4 KO’s) arrived early morning, 23rd Feb. in Cebu as scheduled. Talavera was accompanied by his trainer, former flyweight champion Rosendo Alvarez.

The undefeated Filipino, Pagara (25-0, 18 KO’s) will defend his WBO Inter-Continental super bantamweight title against Talavera at the Cebu City Waterfront Hotel & Casino, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City, Cebu on Saturday night 27th Feb. His title defense will be Pinoy Pride 35 "Stars of the Future" main event, as the successful boxing series returned to Cebu after a successful US debut in October last year. Pagara won the title during that event.

Talavera arrived clad in an all-white tracksuit that looked ripped and ready to rumble.

Featherweight prospect, Mark Magsayo (12-0, 10 KO's) will take on Eduardo Montoya (17-4-1, 13 KO’s) as the co-featured fight of the evening. Magsayo is also scheduled to battle Chris Avalos of Lancaster California as the undercard of Nonito Donaire's scheduled to fight on 23rd April at the Araneta Coliseum in Manila.

Nicaragua's Yesner Talavera (15-3 -1, 4 KO's) along with former light flyweight titleholder Rosendo Alvarez, is scheduled to arrive in Manila on 22 Feb. ahead of his clash with "Prince" Albert Pagara (25-0, 18 KO's) as the main card of Pinoy Pride 35 on 27 Feb. at the Cebu City Waterfront Hotel & Casino, Cebu City.

Mexico's Eduardo Montoya (17-4-1, 13 KO's) with Tony Rodriquez and Magdaleno Motoya are also scheduled to arrive in Manila on the same flight. Montoya will battle featherweight prospect Mark Magsayo, while Rodriguez will face KJ Nataraja.

Following Alexander Dimitrenko's report pulled out of the fight, Luis Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs) is set to face veteran Tony Thompson (40-6, 27 KOs) in a 12-round main event at the DC Armory, in Washington D.C. on March 5 on HBO Boxing After Dark.

It will be another tough test for the hard-hitting Cuban amateur standout. Thompson, 44, is a veteran of 46 fights and has a lot of experience on his sleeves on fight night.

Ortiz'z supposes opponent, Alexander Dimitrenko refuses to sign the fight contract as Golden Boy Promotions (Ortiz's promoter) did not agree to what Greg Cohen said as "11th-hour unrealistic financial requests".

With Dimitrenko's refusal to take the fight, I'm expecting a step-down opponent for Ortiz as the scheduled fight is closing in. Well, Thompson is not really that kind of opponent, as he had stiffer competition compared to the younger Ortiz.

In a shocker, Amir Khan will move up two weight classes to challenge Canelo Alvarez for the lineal middleweight crown. It was a move no one sees it coming. The fight was announced Tuesday to the surprise of the boxing world. It draws different reactions from social media.

The fight will be on HBO-PPV, on May 7 at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Khan's critics' mouths were shut, especially those who said he's ducking rival Kell Brook. It takes real guts and balls to take the bigger, stronger and powerful Mexican star, two weight classes above where Khan is campaigning.

It was really a surprise reading the press release from Golden Boy Promotions from my inbox. Saul Canelo Alvarez, to battle Amir Khan for the lineal middleweight championship? Again what? Really?

Yes! Mexican star Saul Canelo Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) will be fighting UK's Amir "King" Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) for the lineal middleweight championship of the world on May 7, Cinco de Mayo weekend on HBO-PPV at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

I don't see this coming. Well, because of weight disparity. I mean, we all know that Canelo can easily make the middleweight limit at 160 pounds if he wanted to. He's been fighting for a long time at 154. And I believed he already outgrew the division, although he can still make it at 154.

However, Khan moving up two divisions north is something absurd. I mean look... Khan had only three fights at welterweight. He found success at 140-pound division, to say the least, but he has not done anything significant yet at 147. And yet now he's moving up to 160? Come on!

But anyway, just for the sake of dubbing the fight "middleweight championship of the world" I believed, Canelo would agree at a catch-weight no less than 155 pounds. Khan fighting Canelo at the middleweight limit will put him at a severe disadvantage. Khan's only advantage over Canelo is his speed, to a much slower, but dangerously stronger Canelo.

With an added weight, Amir Khan would really give up his speed advantage let alone his power. His power for sure will not have that telling effect on Canelo that will be standing at around 160 pounds plus during fight night.

On another point, this fight, in my opinion really screwed up the legitimate middleweight contenders. They denied the middleweight crown to the legit middleweights to battle for it. If we look at the top ten middleweight contenders ranked by Transnational Boxing Ranking Board: at number 1. Gennady Golovkin at number 2. Daniel Jacobs 3. Billy Joe Saunder. Man... these are the contenders that should have the opportunity to fight the middleweight king whoever he is.

Philadelphia, PA—Super middleweight Jesse Hart brings his boxing skills back home for the first time in 15 months when he defends his North American Boxing Organization (NABO) title against Dashon Johnson, of Escondido, CA, in the scheduled 10-round main event Friday evening, March 18, at the 2300 Arena in South Philadelphia. First of seven fights is at 7 p.m.

Hart, 26, is the son of former Philly middleweight contender Eugene “Cyclone” Hart, whose legendary left hook terrorized the 160-pound division in the 1970s.

The younger Hart (left), a pro since 2012, is 19-0, 16 K0s. He is ranked No. 3 in the world among 168-pounders by the World Boxing Organization (WBO), No. 8 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and No.10 by the World Boxing Association (WBA).

“I’m beyond excited to be fighting in my first main event in front of my home town fans,” Hart said. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Hart last boxed in Philadelphia on Dec. 13, 2014, when he knocked out Colombian Samuel Miller in two rounds at the 2300 Arena.

In three subsequent fights in 2015—two in Las Vegas, NV, one in Tucson, AZ--Hart scored knockouts over Mike Jimenez, of Chicago, IL, Aaron Pryor, Jr., of Cincinnati, OH, and Andrik Saralegui, of Tijuana, Mexico.

Hart won the vacant NABO super middleweight title by beating Jimenez and he defended it against Pryor.

Johnson (right), 28, has turned his career around by winning his last four fights, including an eighth-round stoppage of one-time conqueror Mike Gavronski in Gavronski’s Tacoma, WA, backyard last November. He followed that upset with another one in his last fight Jan. 15, when he earned a 10-round decision over Izaak Cardona, of Colorado Springs, CO, also in Tacoma, WA.

On Saturday night at the Staple’s Center in Los Angeles, Danny Garcia (32-0, 18 KO) squared off against two-time World Champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (33-4-1, 18 KO) for the WBC welterweight title.

At first, this appeared to be just another “cherry picked” fight by Garcia. Garcia handpicked Paulie Malignaggi (35-7, 7 KO) in his last fight, which was Garcia’s first fight in the welterweight division. Garcia ended up winning by TKO in the ninth. In Garcia’s second fight at 147 lbs, it looked like he was at it again, cherry picking another opponent.

Guerrero’s last two fights have been pretty merciless. He won, in controversial fashion, against journeyman Aaron Martinez and lost by unanimous decision in a brutal fight against the WBA title holder Keith Thurman. Knowing that Garcia did not look his best prior to the Malignaggi fight, I anticipated a pretty decent fight. I was right.

Guerrero came out like a bat out of hell pressuring Garcia. Guerrero had his moments, going to the body and placing the right hook here and there.

But Garcia was disciplined. He did not get into the war Guerrero wanted to get him into. The Philadelphia native, used the “Philly” style against Guerrero. He counterpunched Guerrero magnificently with counter rights and looping left hooks, catching him flush on the side of the head. Garcia also had very subtle but effective body punches once Guerrero tried to bully him against the ropes and in the corner. Garcia’s ring IQ was OUTSTANDING, using angles and circling left to right, confusing and frustrating Guerrero.

Garcia truly showed he is a complete fighter. He could dance and he could put the pressure on you. He reminded me of someone possibly conducting surveillance on Garcia. That someone was seated ringside. That someone is the “retired” Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Instead of signing Mexican great Marco Antonio Barrera as his manager and trainer, Moises Fuentes (23-2, 12 KO) signed another Mexican great in Erik "El Terrible" Morales to his team to handle the job.

Morales will be training Fuentes, if the fight pushes through, against longest-reigning Filipino boxing champion Donnie Nietes in a trilogy at the Cebu City Sports Complex.

According to Mike Angel Lopez of Philboxing.com, "Fuentes who is under the promotional banner of Zanfer Promotions, has dropped Marco Antonio Barerra as his manager and trainer and has signed with Erik Morales."

It was earlier reported that Nietes will face Fuentes for the third time instead of fighting someone else as the co-featured bout of Nonito Donaire title defense in Manila on April 23. Instead, Nietes will headline a separate fight card in Cebu.

Both Morales and Barrera are special in the heart of Filipinos as they both had thrilling battles with Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.

ALA Promotions' Pinoy Pride Series on its 35th installment will be back at its home base in Cebu for another spectacular fight card. Junior featherweight standout "Prince" Albert Pagara (25-0, 18 KO) will headline the card against Nicaragua's Yesner Talavera at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino on 27 February. The event will be telecast by Philippine giant network ABS-CBN.

The 21-year-old Filipino has been touted as the next big thing in Philippine boxing. He's been undefeated for 25 fights, 18 fights inside the distance. Pagara has decent power in both hands. He's been impressive in his American debut, knocking out William Gonzalez in Round 6 at the Stub Center, Carson in October 2015. I'm expecting him to challenge for a world title this year.

It was also ALA promotion's US debut after a successful international venture held first in Dubai in September 2014.

Pagara knocked out Jesus Antonio Rios in Round 1 during Pinoy Pride's return to Dubai in August 2015.

Meanwhile, Talavera (15-3-1, 4 KO) has never been stopped in his three career defeats. This will be his first fight outside of his native Nicaragua.

Now on it's 35th installment, the successful Pinoy Pride series will be back at their home turf giving the Cebuano fans back their fighters. Below is the full list of under-cards.

Danny Garcia picked up another title, this time in the welterweight division, via a unanimous decision victory over the very durable Robert Guerrero at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, California on PBConFox Saturday night.

Garcia (32-0, 18 KO) was able to weather the early onslaught "The Ghost" brought in the first four rounds. But starting Round 5, Garcia took control all the way to the final bell. He's so precise with his counter punching. He continuously landed the overhand right and right hook to Guerrero's head.

Garcia, 22, of Philadelphia, was sharpshooting, while on the defensive end. He constantly moves to avoid the left hand of Guerrero in the southpaw stance.

Guerrero (33-4-1, 18 KO) made his final push through in the final minute of the twelfth, the barrage was not enough to turn the fight around. In the second half of the fight, Guerrero looked old and obviously tired as he kept on eating hard after hard shots from the more precise Garcia.

Three judges at ringside have it 116-112.

Charles Martin (23-0-1, 21 KO) captured a version of the heavyweight title as he won a technical decision stoppage over Vyacheslav "Czar" Glazkov (21-0-2, 13 KO) in a co-featured Showtime boxing card in Brooklyn.

The taller Martin used his height and size advantage fighting tall against a smaller opponent in Glaskov. In the first two rounds, both fighters started slow and worked from the outside.

Early in the third round, Glazkov slipped and as he stands up looked like something was wrong with his leg. In the final sequence, Glazkov threw a punch to the body and Martin countered a right hand that landed on Glazkov's gloves. But Glazkov fell down on the canvas and in tremendous pain, motioning to his knee. The referee initiated the mandatory count to signal an official knockdown. Glazkov told the referee that he's unable to continue.

It was later found out by the ringside doctor that the injury was possibly a torn ACL. Right after the fight, Glazkov left the arena for medical attention.

Martin is now the second American that captured a piece of  the heavyweight title.
